A load should never protrude from the front of a car and should therefore not extend beyond the snout of your car. At the back, the load may protrude from a car, but no further than 1 meter past the end of the car. There is one exception to this: if the load is not divisible, for example a long pipe, and if it protrudes more than 1 metre, then you must follow the legal signage rules. Those are quite bulky, but broadly speaking you need to attach the following: a reflective red and white sign at the end of the load, a red light at the back and orange reflectors at the side when driving at night.
